"Custom," "made-to-order," and "off-the-rack" get used interchangeably a lot — but they're three genuinely different ways of getting a suit, each with its own tradeoffs in fit, personalization, and timeline. Here's how to tell them apart and choose the right one for you.
Custom Clothing
Custom garments are built entirely from your own measurements and body shape — nothing is adapted from an existing pattern. It's the most personalized option we offer, with full control over fabric, fit, and details, and a typical turnaround of 6–8 weeks.
Made to Order
Made to Order sits between custom and off-the-rack: you're getting a standard suit cut in the fabric of your choice, rather than a pattern built from scratch around your body. You can still choose fabric, lining, buttons, and style — and even order separates in different sizes, like a larger jacket paired with smaller trousers — giving you a more personalized, higher-quality garment without the full price tag of custom clothing. Our in-house tailors can also refine the fit further once the piece arrives. It works especially well if you're close to a standard suit size already.
Off-the-Rack
Off-the-rack suiting comes in standard sizes and is available for immediate purchase — ideal when you need something now, or want to try a style before committing to a custom build. One thing worth knowing: our signature in-house cut is featured specifically on Artful Tailoring branded suits, not every off-the-rack piece we carry. Any of our ready-to-wear pieces can also go through in-house alterations for a closer fit.
